Soundtrack To June (Amplifying Black Voices)

Hello all,

Today I thought I would post anther monthly soundtrack post. Firstly, because it is easy to write and I have been feeling super drained and unmotivated to write recently and secondly because I wanted to put together a playlist filled with only black POC artists. It is so important to honour, listen and amplify black voices now and continually. While so many people have shared their favourite documentaries, films, organisations to support – I thought I would give a list of music created by black musicians, who so beautifully tell their truths and stories through song.

It is commonplace in pop culture today to see white people appropriating, listening too and even stealing black music but when it comes to standing with this community in support of their human rights and against the injustices that occur towards them… these people are nowhere to be seen. I wanted to share this list in support of those black musicians who tell their truth so authentically. To honour and praise them for the incredible work they do.

I would like to acknowledge that as a white person I never want to speak over or speak on behalf of the black POC community. I never want to come across as intending to take the spotlight away from this community – I simply want to share this post to honour those musicians and music that has helped me better understand the struggles and experiences of black people in former and contemporary society. I encourage white people who may be reading this to listen to the lyrics of each song so carefully, as they all portray a very real and important message.

Some playlists to accompany these suggestions include:

Here are 10 songs from 10 black artists who are such important storytellers;

Solange – Mad (ft. Lil Wayne)

Beyoncé (ft. Kendrick Lamar) – Freedom

Corinne Bailey Rae – Put Your Records On

Thelma Plum – Better In Blak

Aretha Franklin – A Change Is Gonna Come (originally Sam Cooke)

JAY-Z – The Story Of O.J.

Dave – Black

Nina Simone – Feeling Good
