Looking Back on 2019 & Looking Forward to 2020

Hello all,

We are now in the new year! I am still taking stock and trying to comprehend the past 12 months of 2019, give me a minute! Nonetheless, I was definitely ready to enter another wonderful 365 days of fresh, beautiful experiences. Like most people, the beginning of a new year for me can be very daunting but exciting simultaneously. Daunting because I think there is definitely a great deal of pressure and exceptions placed on you going into a new year (and for us now, A NEW DECADE). A pressure to set goals, change habits and leave certain things behind in the previous year. To add to that pressure, the stress of busy schedules during Christmas and having only a few days between Christmas and New Years Eve can be overwhelming for most of us. And exciting because it’s a new year that offers us a new start, a fresh beginning and the ability to reinvent ourselves. Essentially, it symbolises transformation and growth and I think that is why so many of us resonate with the idea of stepping into the new year!

For The New Year (Affirmation)

For me, going into 2020 means setting aside expectations for myself. It means not comparing myself or my successes or losses to others. It means being grateful for the little things as often as I can. It means being positive and embracing the knowledge that the universe has a plan for me and every single person. It means being confident in the knowledge that the universe will put me exactly where I need to be next year. I don’t need to force any situation because the experiences that I need to have will manifest in my reality. And on the chance that a negative situation does arise, don’t push it away, don’t blame others or the universe. Take responsibility, take power of the situation and allow ti to serve its purpose. Each experience is a lesson. Sometimes those lessons may be difficult and sometimes loss occurs, but you will come out of each experience differently. You are stronger than you know.

Say NO to things because you can. You don’t have to be at every event, you don’t have to do/say/be anything. You have the autonomy to make the decision that aligns with your values and is best for you. Yes, you can think about how it will effect others too and use it to influence a decision but if something is going to make you unhappy and unfulfilled, you should not feel obligated to go through with it. Saying no is okay and its about time it becomes more normalised, less frowned upon and not associated directly with selfishness.

It is OKAY to do things on your own. In fact, solo ventures can be the most life changing. That is not to discredit the impact that being with friends can have but you need your alone time. You deserve alone time and you deserve to be happy and content when doing things alone. It is actually quite empowering to

“Oh my God, what if you wake up some day, and you’re 65, or 75, and you never got your memoir or novel written, or you didn’t go swimming in those warm pools and oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life, of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like when you were a kid? It’s going to break your heart. Don’t let this happen.”
